iPodの発売日、ハードウェア担当たちは、恐る恐るiPodを分解した。Appleはどんな衝撃対策やデータ保護対策をしているのだろう…。どんな未知のテクノロジーを使ってユーザーのデータを保護しているのだろうか？

結果は…iPodの中に裸のハードディスクがゴロンと入ってるだけだった。加速度センサー？そんなものは微塵も無かった。衝撃対策は、ゴムみたいな何かを挟んでる以外は何もしてなかった。「データは消えても知らん」という設計思想だった。実際、iPodはデータが飛ぶことがあった。

iTuneも著作権保護もぐだぐだで、国内メーカーがこぞって進めていた「自称」世界標準の著作権保護規格であったSDMI規格も100%無視されていた。CDに焼いたり複数のiPodにコピーできたりなんでもアリすぎて、これもびっくりした。

ハードウェア担当が言った。

「こんなん、ウチではだされへんがな。」

iPodが売れるに従い、我々がこだわっていたことは一体なんだったのかと思うようになった。
